Emission free dismantling of SF6 plants

Disposal of SF6 gas from medium voltage switchgear

Environmentally friendly disposal of SF6 gas medium voltage installations

When looking at medium voltage (1 kV to about 60 kV), mostly sealed switching stations filled with SF6 gas are relevant. Even though each plant only contains a few kilograms SF6 gas, the problem lies in the amount of plants in operation. During the production of medium voltage switching stations SF6 gas is filled into the plants and they are sealed gastight. The SF6 gas stays in the plant during its entire lifespan. From the outside it isn’t obvious the plant is filled with climate harming SF6 gas. This is the reason the gas needs to be evacuated from the medium voltage plant by specialists when disposing of it. Since these plants usually don’t have valves for evacuation, we drill into the medium voltage switching station under a vacuum and are able to aspirate the SF6 gas completely without anything escaping into the atmosphere. We have evacuated hundreds of SF6 medium voltage stations and got the SF6 gas as well as the plants into recycling.

We can either evacuate the plant on site or you can send the entire plant to our approved treatment facility through our forwarding partners. We evacuate and treat the SF6 gas emission free there and bring it back into the material cycle directly. Any SF6 gas treated this way prevents the production of new gas and plays a significant role in avoiding emissions.
